Ziramic
Ziramic is a proprietary, ceramic-metal coating based on a complex
compound of zirconium metal. The coating is applied by Surmets
proprietary ion plating technology at low temperatures. Ziramic
technology extends PVD coating beyond carbide and high-speed steel to
heat sensitive steels and other materials.
A complex compound of zirconium is applied as a multilayer coat on
the substrate by Surmet's proprietary physical vapor deposition technology.
This coating can be applied to heat sensitive steels and other materials
because of the low process temperatures used to apply Ziramic.
Key Benefits
- Excellent release properties for plastics processing.
- Wide range of substrates including metals, ceramics and polymeric materials can be coated.
- Wear performance is superior to titanium nitride (TiN).

Coating Conditions
Ziramic is applied by Surmets ion plating microcoating technology.
Metal vapor is created in a vacuum by ion bombardment and is deposited
very slowly onto the substrate surface. Special electrical conditions
assure atomic-scale bonding of the coating to the parts surface.
The parts are coated cold no external heating is used to raise
the parts temperature prior to deposition. Therefore, the parts
temperature does not exceed 350 °C during the entire process. This
assures the customer that the parts metallurgical condition will
remain unaltered. No tempering, precipitation or dimensional change
will occur. The coating is typically one micron thick (40 millionths
of an inch). Thicker coatings are possible for special applications.
